Speakers: Voices that Shape the future of food waste management  

The ReFED Food Waste Summit aims to bring together a diverse group of over 20 experts and innovators in the food waste recycling and reduction space from various sectors, including business, government, and nonprofit organizations. Each brings a unique perspective on waste reduction and sustainable food systems. Here are some prominent speakers to look forward to:  

Clementine O’Connor is a Sustainable Food Systems Programme Officer at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). With over 10 years of experience in sustainable agriculture and food systems, O’Connor has been a key player in promoting sustainable practices within the food industry. At UNEP, she leads the sustainable food systems program, which aims to address the environmental, social, and economic challenges of our food system. 

Stephen Satterfield, the founder and executive director of Whetstone Media, a food media company that explores the diverse stories and cultures that surround food, is a passionate advocate for sustainable agriculture and the importance of healthy food systems. Having been featured in publications such as The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal, he is also a widely recognized thought leader on issues related to social and environmental justice within the food industry. We look forward to his unique perspective on how the food industry can address issues of waste and sustainability while also promoting social and environmental equity.  

Dr. Roni Neff is a renowned expert in the fields of food systems and public health. She is an associate professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, where she directs the Food System Sustainability and Public Health Program. Dr. Neff’s research focuses on a variety of issues related to food systems and public health, including food waste, sustainable diets, and food policy. She has published numerous articles and reports on these topics and has advised governments and organizations around the world on how to reduce food waste and promote more sustainable food systems.  

These are just a few examples of the many knowledgeable and inspiring speakers that will be presenting at the summit.  


Hands-on Workshops and Field Trips:   

Workshops and field trips are an integral part of the ReFED Food Waste Summit, providing attendees with hands-on learning opportunities and a chance to explore innovative solutions to food and by-product waste

Some of the events include: 

  • St. Louis Area Foodbank 
    Participants can visit this food bank and learn about how it collects, stores, and distributes food to people in need while minimizing waste. This field trip will provide insights into how food banks can help reduce food waste while addressing food insecurity. 
  • The Missouri Botanical Garden 
    This field trip will take attendees to the Missouri Botanical Garden, where they can learn about composting, gardening, and other sustainable practices that can be applied to reduce food waste. 
  • EarthDance Organic Teaching Farm  
    Participants will have the opportunity to visit the oldest organic farm west of the Mississippi River. The trip will include a tour of the farm, where participants can gain a deeper understanding of the inner workings of this unique, small-scale organic farm.
